Further bid to halt bus lounge plan Another bid will be made to stop plans to put a bus passenger waiting lounge on the corner of Riccarton Rd and Division St. The city council’s infrastructure, transport and environment committee has recommended the passenger waiting lounge be on the cor-

ner which is currently the site of a clothing and gift store. But Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said it was not the best option. Mr Mora would be asking the city council to again look at the possibility of the Westfield Riccarton site. “If Westfield will not accommodate on their land then we have no

other option. All the way along we have asked to keep negotiations open with them,” he said. He has asked if the community board could present a deputation to the city council before the final decision was made at a meeting on December 11. Lynch said the group had always been supportive of the plans for the resolution of the passenger waiting lounge. “However, the city council has publicly stated that they have been pursuing alternate options,” he said. She said the board had asked while decisions were still being made if a smaller shelter could be put in where bus stops already were at the Westfield site. “This would only require taking out the grass verge,” she said. Board member Debbie Mora said it was unfortunate the board had been left out of negotiations. “I’m really frustrated I’m not able to represent the area. The board gets a lot of flack from people in the community about not doing things but unfortunately the council aren’t keeping us involved with the progression.” After almost a year spent investigating possible sites committee chair councillor Phil Clearwater said he was optimistic the city council would have the bus waiting lounge ready before autumn. From today [December 8] Environment Canterbury changes to 75 per cent of the Metro network would come into place.

Concerto competition draws young musicians The 48th National Concerto Competition will be held at the Middleton Grange School performing arts centre this week. On Tuesday and Wednesday 20 young musicians from around the country will compete for a prize pool of $13,600 and the title of concerto champion of the year. This year’s competition is for piano. Contestants include Stephen Watson, of Upper Riccarton, Bradley Wood,

of Yaldhurst, Erin Kong, of West Melton, and Joan Tay, of Redwood. Contestants will perform before a panel of music Professor Terence Dennis, of Dunedin, Dr Donna Coleman, of Melbourne and Catherine Denley, of Trinity College London. The competition, open to musicians under the age of 25, was regarded as the leading concerto competition in New Zealand. Contestants were free to

Centre soon complete BY GRACE CABELL The rebuild of the half milliondollar Hei Hei Community Centre is near completion. All foundations, ceilings and roofing are now fully complete with painting and decorating work well under way. Contractor work is due to be completed by mid-December. The building would be handed back to the asset owner for usage prior to Christmas. An official opening was proposed for late January. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said the centre was a vital source for the community. “It’s an area where there is quite a lot of social need. It is the only facility in the area other than The Hub Hornby - it’s very much needed,” she said. Maintenance work was being undertaken to ensure the centre was in a suitable condition for reopening. The centre would include a large main hall with a stage, a supper room, large kitchen and a small upstairs area. It was situated in front of Wycola Park which had a skateboard ramp, full basketball court and a playground. Groups such as the Canterbury Fiji Social Services Trust would benefit from its use.

▌IN ▌ BRIEF New social housing

The first sod of soil has been turned at a social housing project in Hornby. A neighbourhood for 80 to 100 low to medium income residents is being developed on 1.42ha of land. The first homes to be completed would be in the Abbeyfield development, which would include 12 residential homes for ages 55 and over.

School parking solved

Halswell Primary School parking changes have been resolved. The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has approved all existing parking restrictions currently located on the north side of School Rd to be revoked. A bus stop would be installed and three-minute parking restrictions would be placed on the north side of the road.

Xmas dinner

The Neighbourhood Support Group is hosting a Christmas pot luck dinner on Wednesday at 6.30pm. The event will be held at the Riccarton Baptist Church on the corner of Peverel and Rattray Sts.

War historian’s collection serving Christchurch City Libraries has digitised a collection of war memorabilia which can be viewed online. Historian and author Barry O’Sullivan helped out by having pieces from his collection digitised. Reporter Kyle Knowles spoke to him about his massive collection of military items and how it helps school pupils learn You helped out with the digitisation of war memorabilia for the Christchurch libraries? Yes, I supplied items that they digitised for their records and resources, I supplied the items from my collection. What were the items? A number of Canterbury-related items, anything that was named or attributed to a Canterbury World War 1 soldier. There was a wide variety that was digitised including a diary. It is late war and there is a bit of field reference in there. Ideally, it was things that were Canterburybased. It was what the Christchurch libraries wanted. How many pieces were digitised? I don’t know, 50 maybe. They were from my private collection which I have been collecting for 35 years. Where did you collect it all from? I acquired them from secondhand shops, auction houses, garage sales, antique shops all sorts

of places. How many pieces do you have? 4500. Would that be one of the largest war memorabilia collections in New Zealand? Quite possibly. There is a lot of memorabilia out there. It’s one of the largest collections that has the benefit of actually being researched. How do you research it? There is a service number that goes with a lot of it and it’s easy with computer-based information these days. There’s service records and online resources, that helps too. What information do you usually find? Whose it was, what unit they were in, where they served what qualifications they have and medal

MASSIVE: Barry O’Sullivan has a collection of more than 4500 pieces of memorabilia including a ‘lemon squeezer’ hat used by a serviceman in the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN entitlements. What is in your collection? Clothing, uniforms, personal equipment, personal affects, letters, hats, caps, coats, jackets underwear so quite a lot. Where is it all stored? It’s in a special room the size of a garage. It has had to change as the collection grew too. It always evolves as I am always getting more pieces and trying to find out the de-

tails of them and who owned them. Have you found any famous or well-known soldiers’ memorabilia? No, I don’t really go into the glamour stuff, I do the nuts and bolts of it all. I am just as interested in the common soldiers as the people at the top of the chain. They all had their major part to play in the wars and they were just as important as officers and high ranking

people. Is digitising the items a good thing? Definitely. By digitising the pieces it means it’s accessible to more people. There is nothing worse than having something special hidden in a closet that you can’t see and can’t learn from so it is great to get it out there and people can interpret what it means to them for themselves.

as an educational tool How were the pieces digitised? They got it professionally done by micro graphics people out at Wigram. I supplied the items and the information. They took the photos of the memorabilia and I had it back the next day. There was a school resource you helped with too? Yes, I helped with the items for the Canterbury school education resource pack for teachers. That’s basically a resource for teachers with pupils in years seven to 10 on how to teach children military history. You are an author as well? I have written a couple books. New Zealand Army Uniforms and Clothing 1910-145 and then New Zealand Army Personal Equipment 1910-1945 as well. I have written a few more books as well. These ones were great because of the colour pictures. Colour images in World War 1 were non-existent and in World War 2 they were very scarce so these have great colour illustrations of what things would have looked like in the wars. Do you enjoy the writing? Yes, it is quite therapeutic. Just getting all the junk out of my head and putting it into something that resembles the jumble of my mind. It is easier writing with someone else, hence the co–author of the books – military historian, Wayne Stack. What has drawn you to mili-

IN ACTION: Members of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade operating a mortar in Stokes Trench, Le Quesnoy, France, in 1918. Recapturing the town was New Zealand’s last major action in World War 1. tary history? Just a boyhood interest, all boys play with army toys. My first piece of memorabilia was essentially a rank crown that my grandmother gave me. I don’t know the motivation for it. What is your favourite piece of memorabilia you have?

I’ve got 45000 favourite pieces. It’s more like I have favourite categories. I really like the specific jungle suit that New Zealand soldiers wore during World War 2. Just the way it was developed and the Kiwi ingenuity behind it and the fact that it is really hard to come by and it

is a really underrated piece of memorabilia because it’s just such a hard piece of military history to get your hands on. There’s not many people who know much about it and it’s a significant part of military history. What do you like to do away from collecting? Research into military history. I’m a house husband too and a part-time hospital aid. Where do you like to get away to? The farmyard at Orari, near Geraldine. I like to get away with the family down there. Where do you live in Christchurch? Avondale and I am still waiting for repairs and that land vulnerability blah blah blah – you get the picture? After so much research and collecting of military memorabilia from the world wars what is your favourite part of it? We won. •The WW100 series was launched by Christchurch South Library last week. It is a teaching resource that aims to raise awareness of the impacts and causes of World War 1. It is focused on Canterbury and Christchurch’s involvement with the war from 1914-1919. Victoria Cross recipient to attend Rannerdale dinner New Zealand’s only living Victoria Cross recipient, Willie Apiata (right), has confirmed he will attend a fundraising dinner in February, commemorating the work of Rannerdale Veteran’s Care in Riccarton. The organisation was started in 1921, to care for severely and permanently disabled soldiers returning from World War 1. Rannerdale chief executive Steve Shamy said he was honoured that Corporal Apiata accepted the invitation to be guest of honour and say Grace at the event. Corporal Apiata was awarded a Victoria Cross after rescuing a fellow soldier under enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan. “The public can buy tickets for a fantastic dinner and experience the ceremony that is a formal military regimental dinner,” said Mr Shamy. Tickets are $250 per person, with funds raised going to support the development of the Veterans’ Community Support Service. To buy tickets, email Ingrid@rannerdale. co.nz.

Halswell School celebrates 150 years Halswell Primary School is celebrating its 150-year anniversary. The school is asking their community of current and past students, parents and staff to contribute to the planning of the festivities that will mark the 150th sesquicentennial. Halswell Primary first opened its doors to the children of the community in 1864. At the time it was a humble one-room rural schoolhouse servicing a handful of children. Following the completion of the post-earthquake works, scheduled for early 2015, the school will be a state-of-the-art facility catering to more than 600 children. To commemorate these two significant milestones in the school’s history the Board of Trustees are planning to stage an event for their alumni and those with current connections to the school. “As a great deal of planning needs to go into this, we want to ensure that we design a programme that will appeal to as many people as possible,” said

Pupils express thoughts through art An art project involving more than 600 primary school pupils is placed on hoardings around the Christ Church Cathedral until December 13. The project Kids for Learning launched on November 20 marking Universal Children’s Day. School pupils aged eight to 11 have expressed their thoughts on the right to education, happiness, friendship, love and a brighter future. The schools include Burnside Primary School, Cashmere Primary School, Discovery 1, Fendalton Primary School, Ilam Primary School, Nova Montessori School and Papanui Primary School. Project founder and Christchurch photographer Tanya Mariel Iniguez started the project to bring

to attention the power of education. “Every child, everywhere, has the right to an education. The right to learn, ask questions, gain skills and reach their full potential. No child should be left behind because they missed out on an education,” she said. United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund New Zealand executive director Vivien Maidaborn said the right to learn was a core principal of the organisation’s work. “This project and exhibition reminds us that while all children should have the right to learn, many still do not. Almost 58 million children, six to 11 years of age are still out of school, half of whom live in Nova Montessori School pupil countries affected by conflict,” Kayla, 8, said her picture she said. represents love and family.

Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery pupil Avery, year 3, said his art showing a child holding a book is about the right to learn. Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery pupil Gabriel, year 6, said his art is about being connected with your parents even if you’re separated.

Fendalton Open Air Primary School pupil Abby, year 5, said her work shows that a small gift like a chicken or a goat can make the biggest difference. “The right to education is having a place that lets you gain knowledge,” she said.

Empty fuel drums are still dangerous BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

You have a drum that has recently been emptied of methanol. You want to cut the top off the drum to put it to another use. You cut the steel with a gas torch. Last week this was the scenario at a place in Riccarton.

It resulted in burns to face and hands that required hospital attention. It’s so easy to do. But oil, petrol, and of course methanol containers are at their most dangerous when empty of liquid. That’s because what remains is a vapour, generally already at a perfect mix with air to be within its

flammability range. Add heat, add flame and the result is inevitable. There is apparently no safe way to overcome this. Just don’t! On the subject of people getting hurt from flames, a kitchen fire in a house on Wairakei Rd, last Sunday resulted in an occupant suffering both smoke inhalation and burns. This happens far too often with

Locally-owned hearing clinic achieving superior results for patients

Hearing technology is fully independent and locally owned since its inception 23 years ago, with clinics in Christchurch, Timaru, Ashburton, Auckland and Whangarei.

W

hat differentiates Hearing Technology from other audiology clinics is the customer-focused service offered. “Our goal is to make every visit one that patients leave feeling great about,” says John Robertson. “We try and make it special.” Hearing Technology will pick patients up if they are unable to drive themselves to the clinic, if they live close by. Being independent, Hearing Technology is not owned by a hearing aid manufacturer, therefore their clients are fitted with hearing devices from a range of manufacturers to best suit their needs. Many of their patients say that supporting a New Zealand-owned practice is important to them. While Hearing Technology offers free hearing checks, they promote full diagnostic assessments which are more in-depth,

True

recommended by doctors, and Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists. This investigates the entire hearing system all the way to the brain to determine where hearing loss has occurred and what the best treatment options are. Hearing Technology is committed to ensuring that patient fittings are highly successful. This is achieved by using the latest technology and not taking shortcuts in the diagnostic phase. We all know people with hearing aids that are never worn – the team at Hearing Technology are on a mission to change that trend. Good funding is available in New Zealand for hearing aids. People with a history of occupational noise exposure can apply to ACC for funding. Ministry of Health subsidies of over $1000 are available for everyone else (if fitting both ears). Hearing Technology utilises the latest wax

removal technology. Microsuction is less invasive, removing wax by gentle suction as opposed to the traditional method of syringing out with water, which can be very risky. The Shirley branch has extended opening hours to late night Tuesday and Saturday. Phone 0800 142 152.

I’ve been a client with HT for approximately eight years. The audiologists and office staff have been wonderful to deal with, friendly, caring and take your needs into consideration. They also make you feel welcome at all times. I would recommend HT to anyone who requires support with their or their families’ hearing problems. Technology is constantly changing and the staff are well informed and can provide you with informed recommendations so you can get the most out of life.

Are You Being Served?

ne of television’s best loved comedies came to life on stage in Merivale recently when Canterbury Repertory Theatre’s production of Are You Being Served? was presented at the Elmwood Auditorium. All the familiar characters from the fictitious Grace Brothers department store, accurately portrayed by the experienced cast, took the audience on a madcap staff holiday to Spain. Directed by Craig Hutchison, the play took place on a simple but effectively dressed set, which was easily transformed from the ladies and gents’ ready-made departments of Grace Brothers, to the less than desirable Spanish hotel in which most of the action took place. The adventures and antics of the hapless British shop workers abroad drew peals of laughter and hearty applause as the romp became more outrageous. Canterbury Repertory Theatre’s next production of William Shakespeare’s Richard III is planned for March 2015.

HOWZAT: The Rangi Ruru cricket side after their win which secured them a spot in the national tournament in the Canterbury final earlier this year.

Rangi ready to fight for title BY KYLE KNOWLES

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School cricket side is off to their second national finals in as many years. The side won through to the finals to be played in Palmerston North this week by beating Christchurch Girls’ High School earlier this year. The format is Twenty20 and is played over three days with two double-headers first up for the side. Senior player Kristy Havill said the girls were looking forward to the tournament and are going there to fight for the title. “I think since we’ve been working really hard on our fitness we will be in a good position to challenge.” Rangi Ruru finished third in last year’s tournament and have retained some of the players from 2013 which Kristy said was great for the younger players who do not have the experience on the national stage. “We lost a couple of senior players this year and have a rather young team. The girls we have retained from last year have that experience and exposure.” Kristy said the other teams are a bit of an

or those going on holiday, travel safely and remember to secure your property while away. Many burglaries are opportunist and happen while the occupants are away. Even those not going away on holiday are often out of the home more during that time and become a target for thieves, and unfortunately presents around the Christmas tree can also be very tempting for some. Remember; shut and lock all doors and windows while you are out, don’t leave valuables in plain sight and lock away passports & important documents in a safe. Deadlocks make it harder for a burglar to get out with your goods, if they got in through a window and don’t forget to deadlock the internal access door

Traditional roast turkey and gravy Ingredients 5½kgs Turkey, fresh 400g Butter, softened 5 Smoked bacon rashers, choose streaky bacon 500ml Water Gravy 1 Onion, chopped 2 Tbsp Olive oil 125ml Dry white wine 500ml Chicken stock 1 sprig Fresh thyme 200ml Cream 1 Bay leaf 1 Ltr Water Directions Turkey preparation Preheat oven to 220 deg C. Create a double-layered sheet of tinfoil to wrap turkey. Place the turkey onto the foil in the roasting pan and fill the cavity with stuffing. Cover breast and legs with a butter and overlap the strips of bacon over breasts

and thighs. Bring sides of the foil together, creating a kind of envelope. Finally add 500ml of water into the bottom of the roasting pan and cook turkey for 40 minutes. Then turn down oven to 155C to continue cooking a further 3 hours and 45 minutes.* Baste turkey with butter and roasting juices, cook for a further 40 minutes. Baste every 10 minutes in the last 40-50 minutes. Remove turkey from the oven and transfer it to a platter. Wrap with tinfoil to keep warm. Chop the cooked wings into smaller pieces, place the pieces back into the roasting tray. • The turkey should be cooked for 1 hour per kg, so adjust the time if you have a smaller turkey. Gravy preparation Pour butter from roasting pan into a bowl, then add 1 litre of water to pan. Return to oven for 15 minutes. Fry onion in the oil until golden, add wine and reduce. Add stock and reduce by half, then add cream, pan juices, bay leaf and thyme. Simmer for 10 minutes then season. Strain, then serve.

Krill oil for good health!

A

ll our body cell membranes are made up of exactly the same phospholipids as available in krill oil. These phospholipids available in krill are its big advantage over fish oil that is in a triglyceride form and that must be converted by our liver to phospholipid form to be able to have benefits to our cell membranes. This conversion of triglycerides to phospholipids is inefficient and a much larger dose of fish oil is needed for the same benefits as a much smaller dose of krill oil. Another benefit of krill oil is it contains one of the most potent antioxidants known, astaxanthin. Recent research shows krill oil can lower your risk for cardiovascular disease, metabolic

syndrome, obesity, Type 2 diabetes and may lessen a variety of brain and mental disorders, including autism and dyslexia, Parkinson’s and some forms of Alzheimer’s disease. It is also highly effective at reducing high cholesterol levels, increasing HDL cholesterol, reducing triglycerides, reducing C reactive protein and reducing other damaging blood factors. It can also reduce dangerous fat levels in the liver and heart. Krill oil is also a natural anti-inflammatory and can help reduce pain, improve joint function and reduce symptoms of arthritis. Stressed, feeling down, low energy

R

esearch shows many of us are deficient in B vitamins. If you are stressed, anxious, feeling depressed, low in energy, your body will probably be low in B vitamins. A B complex that contains therapeutic amounts of B vitamins in correct proportions may help you feel a lot better. Many medications, including antibiotics, oral contraceptives, all prescription heartburn and reflux medicines and diuretics can reduce B vitamins. Viruses, caffeine, alcohol, high-carb diet, being vegetarian or vegan, pregnant, lactation, athletes and elderly are just some other reasons. Some other common symptoms of a B vitamin deficiency are cracks in the corners

of the mouth, mouth ulcers, cracks and grooves on the tongue, red or painful tongue, thinning hair or alopecia, burning feet, red and greasy facial skin, migraine headaches, high cholesterol levels, poor memory, mental fogginess, nerve and skin pain, and high homocysteine levels that can cause blood vessels to harden. It is best to take a balanced B complex if you are low in a particular B vitamin. Extra single B vitamins may be necessary if there is an absorption problem or longterm deficiency. An amazing herb for stress and energy is rhodiola, which has a calming effect on the body and mental state but at the same time increases energy, vitality, stamina, mood, mental focus and memory. Plynlimon...perfect for the family 31 Plynlimon Road, Fendalton Auction: December 11, 2014

4 bedrooms | 2 living | 2 bathrooms | 2 toilets | 2-car garage | Listing #: PI55582

L

ocated on the north side of the street to maximise sun and privacy is basically a completely new home of almost 300-sqaure-metres, built to the highest standards and quality with all the bells and whistles. The large TC2 section of 809m2 features all the best school zoning like Fendalton Primary, Cobham Intermediate and of course, Christchurch Boys and Burnside High. The house, of Hebel construction, offers four double bedrooms, two bathrooms and two huge living spaces with inbuilt surround sound speakers, two way gas fire and generous opening doors for effortless indoor/outdoor flow. The backyard features a beautifully heated pool where the kids will just love spending all the summer days having bombing competitions with their friends. In my opinion, the home is designed and built for an entertaining family in an affordable Fendalton address. Our vendors have purchased their new home and plans have been set in stone, so this house must be sold either on or maybe even before auction day. Make this your early Christmas present to yourself, an investment wherein your family can never be beaten! Open Home dates: Saturday, December 6, 12pm to 12.30pm and Sunday, December 7, 12pm to 12.30pm. See you at the open homes or before for a private viewing.
